Depression is more than the blues; it is more than the normal, everyday ups and downs. When that "down" mood, along with other symptoms, lasts for more than a couple of weeks, the condition may be clinical depression. Depression describes a huge range of negative thoughts and feelings from sadness to utter hopelessness and an equally broad spectrum of physical symptoms. If the cause is a specific external event, such as a bereavement, depression is usually temporary; it has a natural time span and after a while life settles down to normality again.
